Best Utility Side-by-Sides in Manitoba: What to Look for in a Work UTV

Start With the Job
There isn't one perfect UTV for everyone.
Someone maintaining a five-acre property has very different needs than a farmer moving equipment or a hunter travelling deep into the bush.
Before choosing a machine, think about what it'll spend most of its time doing.
Are you hauling firewood? Pulling a trailer? Moving tools? Plowing snow? Checking land or fence lines? Hunting? Or do you want something that can work during the week and still be fun on the trails?
Once you know that, choosing the right machine gets a lot easier.
Cargo Box Capacity Matters
If you're buying a side-by-side for work, pay attention to the box.
A good dump box makes jobs like moving firewood, soil, fencing supplies, tools and other materials considerably easier.
Don't judge it only by how big the box looks. Compare the actual rated cargo capacity and think about what you'll realistically be carrying.
For a true utility machine, cargo capacity can be more important than having the biggest engine available.
Check the Towing Capacity
A capable utility side-by-side can replace your truck for a surprising number of jobs around the property.
If you're planning to pull a utility trailer, move equipment or haul materials, compare towing capacities between models.
You don't necessarily need the highest number available. You need enough capacity that you're not constantly asking the machine to work at its limit.
4WD Is Almost a Must in Manitoba
Spring mud, wet fields, snow, ice and everything in between.
Manitoba gives you plenty of reasons to have four-wheel drive.
For a work UTV that's going to be used throughout the year, we'd strongly consider selectable 4WD and, depending on the machine, a locking differential.
The side-by-side that works perfectly around your acreage in July still needs to get the job done when there's snow on the ground in January.
Consider a Cab and Heater
If you're planning to use your UTV year-round, a cab can completely change the experience.
A roof and windshield are a good start. An enclosed cab with doors and heat turns the machine into something you can comfortably use through a Manitoba winter.
For farmers, acreage owners and anyone using their machine for winter property maintenance, it's worth factoring a cab into your budget from the beginning.
A Side-by-Side Can Be a Great Snow Plow
One of the biggest benefits of owning a utility side-by-side in Manitoba is being able to use it year-round.
With the right setup, a UTV can make an excellent snow-clearing machine for larger driveways, acreages, yards and commercial properties.
If snow removal is part of your plan, check what plow systems are available for the model you're considering.
A winch is another worthwhile addition. Beyond its usefulness with certain plow setups, it's one of the most useful accessories you can put on a working side-by-side.
Utility vs. Sport Side-by-Side
There's an important difference between a utility UTV and a sport side-by-side.
Sport machines put more emphasis on performance, suspension and recreational riding. Utility machines generally prioritize cargo capacity, towing, durability and getting work done.
Then there are machines that land somewhere in the middle.
If you want to haul firewood Saturday morning and hit the trails Saturday afternoon, a crossover-style machine might make sense.
If 90% of its life will be spent working, we'd focus on a true utility platform.
What Size UTV Do You Need?
Bigger isn't automatically better.
A larger side-by-side can give you more passenger room, power and capability, but it also takes up more space in the garage, on your trailer and when navigating tight trails.
For some Manitoba acreages, a compact utility side-by-side is all that's needed. For a larger farm or commercial property, a full-size UTV with greater cargo and towing capacity may make more sense.
Think about how many people you'll normally carry, what you'll haul, what you'll tow and where the machine needs to fit.
Yamaha, Kawasaki or Suzuki?
There are strong utility machines available from several manufacturers, and the best choice depends on the work you're asking it to do.
At Adventure Power Products, we carry Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki powersports products, which lets us look at different options instead of trying to make the same machine work for every customer.
You might need a smaller UTV for getting around an acreage, a larger-capacity machine for farm work or something versatile enough to handle both work and recreational riding.
Start with the job. Then find the machine that fits it.
Build Your UTV Around the Work
The machine itself is only part of the equation.
Depending on what you're using it for, useful additions can include a winch, snow plow, windshield, roof, full cab, heater, additional lighting, cargo storage and trailer accessories.
You don't need to add everything at once.
Start with the accessories that make the machine better at the jobs you'll actually be doing.
